5 Signs You Might Be Deficient In Vitamin B12

Have you ever felt tired all the time? It might be due to lack of “energy vitamin,” essential for everything your body does. Vitamin B12 plays a major role in the production of DNA, promotes healthy nerve function, and helps to keep the body filled with the red blood cells that carry oxygen in your body. Despite all the benefits it sometimes happens that we lack it, here is how to recognize the sings our body sends to us, when missing B12.
1. WEAKNESS AND FATIGUE
One of the first symptoms for vitamin B12 deficiency is tiredness. When the supplies of B12 runs low, body’s function to produce the red blood cells needed to deliver oxygen throughout your body is weakened, which results in anemia.
The catch here is, tiredness is a general symptom that could easily be attributed to other causes, such as lack of sleep. In case the tiredness keeps getting worse and you can’t pinpoint an obvious cause, it is recommended to visit your doctor. Usually they will get a red-blood cell count to check for anemia. 2. TINGLING HANDS AND FEET
There's a long nerve tract called the posterior tract, which runs from your brain, along your spinal cord all the way to your hands and feet. That nerve tract is coated in a fatty white substance named myelin. Myelin not only protects the nerves, but it also speeds up the nerve impulses, making it possible for your hands and feet to sense touch.
The whole point is, you need B12 in order to produce myelin. Simply, when your reserves of B12 are running low, the myelin breaks down and nerve impulses are travelling slower. All of this results in tingling sensations in your hands and feet.
3. POOR BALANCE
Just as a breakdown of myelin can cause you to lose your sense of touch, it can also affect your your sense of where you are in space, or proprioception. “Proprioception is key for your balance,” explains Michael Roizen, M.D., chief wellness officer at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute. “So if you cut out your proprioception, you have a tendency to fall.” In case you lose your balance often, make an appointment for a blood testing.
Roizen further adds that the protective white substance known as myelin coats the nerve cells in the brain, which if deteriorates leaves you feeling more forgetful than usual.
Generally, misplacing your phone or blanking on a co-worker’s name can happen to anyone and is not considered a dig deal, but if you find you’re increasingly off the game, then it’s time to get yourself tested. Contrary, your vitamin B12 deficiency can cause dementia in just a year’s time.
