Sudden weakness and hunger, trembling hands, sweating, confusion, sudden slurred speech and memory should not be ignored, endocrinologists are warning. These symptoms may indicate hypoglycaemia. Even a single sudden drop in blood sugar may cause a stroke or a heart attack. Contrary to elevated levels of blood sugar, which is the most common manifestation of diabetes, hypoglycaemia is extremely low, or blood sugar levels of less than three millimoles per liter.
Even 98% of those with type 1 diabetes had experience with hypoglycaemia, while a large percentage of patients, especially those with type 2 diabetes, do not recognize the symptoms of this condition at all, which is a particular danger.
In people who have type 1 diabetes and who are on insulin these episodes can occur four to eight times monthly, which is not negligible. Patients with type 2 diabetes, who are on tablets have less frequent hypoglycaemia, about three to four times a month, endocrinologists explain.
The most common causes of hypoglycaemia are overdose or inadequate insulin, insufficient meals, or unplanned physical activity during which the sugar is rapidly consumed in a larger amount. However, hypoglycaemia also occurs in people who do not have diabetes, most often as a result of improper diet based on sweets and in rare cases can even indicate a pancreatic tumor.
When it comes to hypoglycaemia, in case the patient is conscious, it is essential to ingest some 15 grams of carbohydrates to quickly raise the level of blood sugar, for example, a spoon of honey, some sugar, juice or chocolate. In more serious cases in which hypoglycaemia is accompanied by loss of consciousness, a hospital treatment is often needed.
It is very important to recognize hypoglycemia on time and to respond by changing the diabetes therapy, primarily by switching to contemporary types of insulin that regulate blood sugar levels, then educating patients, diet advices and physical activity, doctors advice. It is also important to resemble that regularly conduct self-controls are of extreme importance.
Healthy persons can prevent hypoglycaemia by elimination of concentrated sweets and proper diet, which means more frequent and regular meals.
