The Best Diet for an Underactive Thyroid

If you are diagnosed with hypothyroidism, the foods you eat can have an impact on keeping it under control. Here is which foods are recommended for its proper function.
Some findings suggest that low level of vitamin D is connected with hypothyroidism. Therefore, many people who lack this vitamin are prone to higher levels of thyroid antibodies. “The antibodies activate the immune system to attack the thyroid tissue, which creates inflammation and makes it harder for the thyroid to do its job,” explains Lisa Markley, RDN, co-author of The Essential Thyroid Cookbook.
Getting the recommended amount of vitamin D, which is 600 IUs per day, can keep that inflammation at bay so the thyroid can function properly. Salmon is a great source of vitamin D, with 570 IUs per serving. In case you are not fan of fish, try with orange juice, milk or eggs.
The wanted results can be succeed by taking at least 2 of them per day. That would be the daily portion for getting enough dose of selenium--a mineral that’s highly concentrated in the thyroid gland and is essential in thyroid hormone production.
Another big benefit is that selenium boasts antioxidant powers. “Autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s can lead to increased inflammation,” Markley explains. “Selenium can help calm or suppress some of that through its antioxidant capabilities.”
Iron is also considered a key mineral for treating underactive thyroid. Women aged between 19 and 50 need 18 mg iron per day, while men and women 51 and older need 8 mg. A cup of cooked white beans contains 8 mg of this mineral, which is especially deficient in premenopausal women. But getting your fill is important. “If you don’t, it can impair the activity of enzymes that produce thyroid hormones,” says Dr. Lee, an internist and endocrinologist at Health Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale in Illinois.
There are two main things to keep in mind when consuming iron: First, it is tough for the body to absorb, so it is recommended to pair it with foods rich in vitamin C for better absorption. Tossing white beans with lemon would be one of the combinations. The second thing is that iron can make thyroid drugs less efficient. So make sure not to take any iron-rich foods at least four hours before or after having your thyroid medicaments.
