Tricks That Might Keep You From Getting a Hangover
Health & Beauty / /
Yet, there is no scientific explanation what exactly is the reason for hangovers. The most recommended and the most efficient way to avoid hangovers is not to drink, but in cases when it is unavoidable here are some remedies that can be helpful.
The most scientifically sounding explanation is that hangover is a combination of dehydration, the chemicals that are left in the body when it metabolizes alcohol, and plain-old divine punishment. Anyway, not knowing the exact cause makes it difficult to find the most appropriate cure, furthermore it is difficult to properly test any proposed remedies.
It cannot be said for sure, but some remedies have small amount of scientific evidence behind them making them worth trying. Among them are the following:
A study published in the Journal of Food Science in 2009 suggests that the amino acids and minerals in asparagus may protect the liver cells. Than comes that eating asparagus before a night out should increase the dietary fiber and vitamin A and C levels and help you deal with the possible hangover the day after.
2. Liquors Choose
According to a study published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, darker liquors are more likely to cause hangovers. That is mainly because of fermentation byproducts called congeners contained in bourbon and other dark liquors. Methanol is one of the congeners that breaks apart to formic acid and formaldehyde—toxins that can make the hangover worse.
3. Get enough vitamins
Taking B vitamin supplements before and after the party may help you feel better the day after. Meat, eggs, fish, and fruit that are high in vitamin B, will help the liver break down alcohol, and it may also be beneficial in recovering the nerve damage.
4. Take Sprite
Scientists believe that when we consume alcohol, the body transforms the ethanol into acetaldehyde—a compound that causes the headache the next morning—and then the same acetaldehyde turns into less harmful acetate. Scientific tests indicated that Sprite boosts the activity of an enzyme which role is to break down the acetaldehyde. This results in a less miserable morning-after.
5. Fortify with oxygen
As Popular Science reports, because of the fact that oxygen helps liver break down alcohol, drinking booze that contains more dissolved oxygen may help sober up faster. Oxygen might also play a role in degrading the toxins that cause hangovers. It can be found on some Korean alcohols that they have a higher oxygen content. It can be added to drinks the same way carbonated beverages are made.
6. Stay hydrated
This one does not require a rocket science to be explained. Drinking alcohol makes you visit toilet more often, and you need to replenish those fluids. You may also lose electrolytes, therefore it is believed that sipping sports drinks between slugs of booze may have more benefits than water alone.
