Emeli Sande is back with new single
Music Reviews / /
Four years have passed since we got our hands of 'Our Version Of Events' the incredibly soulful, debut album of Emeli Sande. Now she is making a huge comeback with 'Hurts' and a new album announcement. Check out our review.
If we have to make a list of our favorite albums in the past 5 years, 'Our version of events' would easily be on the top. The Scottish singer/songwriter got our attention with 'Heaven' before her smooth transition to the beat-y 'Daddy', 'Next to me' and 'My kind of love' and finally the emotional, soul bearing, ballad period of 'Clown' and 'Read all about it Pt. III'. Becoming the fastest selling album in the UK in 2012, and producing 4 UK Top 40 singles, the expectations set a pretty high bar score for the follow up album. In the meantime Emeli got divorced, and decided that she wants to slow things down, prioritizing her well-being and her music being true to herself instead of just being a 'product'.
So four years later, she releases new single and announces a brand new album. 'Hurts' was chosen to be the lead single taken off 'Long live the angels' which is set to be released 11th November.
'Hurts' is a powerful, clap-beating song with R&B elements, most resembling to 'Next to me'. It is up-tempo, yet the lyrics are about being hurt, learning to say NO and most importantly that it is ok to say that you are not OK.
It hurts the way
That you pretend you don’t remember
It hurts the way
That you forget our times together
Like the time
Laid in bed when you said it’s forever, baby
I can’t, I can’t explain no more
Baby I’m not made of stone
Loving you the way I do
The song has that raw emotion, the kind that touches you deep. With the new single Emeli has shown us that upbeat songs can still be sad, soulful and that the right thing is to choose what works best for you even if it might be the toughest choice.
The day of the release Emeli performed the song live at BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, and of course treated us with a cover of one of her favorite songs from the past year 'FourFiveSeconds' from Rihanna.
Check out the performances below and let us know what you think. Are you excited about 'Long live the angels'? We know we are.
