After the exquisite 'Off road', Skylar Grey has a new single and an album announcement. Check out our review.
'Natural Causes' will be the title of Skylar Grey's upcoming album and it is being released September 23rd. She had the winter romance themed 'Moving Mountains', then she went 'Off road' and now the single that officially announces the album is 'Coming up for air'. Since Skylar has proven to be great (and totally underrated) singer/songwriter, lately she has been experimenting with her creativity and the music genres she can (easily) switch into.
The new single is a slow paced, dreamy ballad, that was (get ready) produced by Eminem. The lyrics of the post break-up song touch subjects like everlasting love, him being the one and a floating hope of returning back to their love nest. She even compares her lover to Jack (from Titanic), and she calls herself Rose, the one that is waiting for her lover to ‘come up for air’.
I'm no good for you
I'm not what you need
You've made it very clear
Though I disagree
Enough to let you go
To let you drift away
Cause once you navigate these troubled waters
I believe that someday you'll return
And I will still be here
When you come up for air
Do you what you gotta do
I'll wait for you, to come for air..."
This might easily be the most soul bearing song Skylar has ever released. It is wrapped up with sadness, it is dark and 'heavy', yet it can easily be described with 'it's always darkest before the dawn'.
The single got a video treatment as well, which fits the song perfectly. In the Daniel Cranberry directed visual, Skylar is sitting alone in a photo shoot look-a-like set before it starts raining out of nowhere and she gets tangled in some nature elements, before she gets tragically strangled to death. The video that starts as a 'polished' visual, turns out to be subtly dramatic, and as the song progressed we see that it is a perfect sublimation of the lyrics and the music.
Check it out and let us know what you think. Are you excited for Skylar's long awaited album?
