What 'Magic Mushrooms' Do To Your Brain
Science & Tech / /
Researchers are always trying to understand better the process of human consciousness by exploring regions, cells and neutrons in the brain. The newest way of looking at brain activity shows us how psychedelic drugs cause effects of altered consciousness of people.
Psilocybin is a compound found in so called magic mushrooms. With just one experience with this substance you can have lasting positive emotional and psychological effects.
This kind of experiences can make individuals more open minded, which is an information proven by Josh Hopkins researchers. One taste is enough to make significant changes in the ‘’openness to experience’’ of personality domain. This was associated with creativity and intellectual curiosity.
According to some studies, awareness isn’t shaped by specific regions of the brain, but of interaction of regions and cells. To understand how this works, scientists have compared scans of the brains of 15 people who previously consumed psilocybin with those of people who weren’t under the influence of this substance.
On the picture below you can see on the left, the stable brain activity in a normal brain. Right, under the influence of psilocybin, diverse brain regions not normally in communication become strongly linked.
Each circle represents the relationship between networks, and the items and colors represent specific network connections in the brain.
We can speculate on the implications of such an organization. One possible by-product of this greater communication across the whole brain is the phenomenon of synesthesia which is often reported in conjunction with the psychedelic state
Many scientists also believe that this kind of mushrooms or some other psychedelics might have a significant therapeutic use for people who suffer from depression or other mental health problems like PTSD. But for this statement to be shown as true, further researching must be done.
Through the years several studies were made, and we have chosen to show you one that is not the newest, but interesting for you to check out.
